What's happeningThe first freight train on the Wodonga Rail Bypass, slowly rolled in along a newly laid section of track in mid-March 2010. The train travelled from Wagga to deliver concrete sleepers to the project site. Track works have commenced and are expected to be completed in mid-2010. Four freight trains are scheduled to travel along the new bypass route in March to deliver a total of 15,000 sleepers.
The new station is also progressing with concrete foundation and the station carpark complete and frame work for the building being constructed.
Upcoming works include continued construction of the new train station, finalising road and bridge works and installing new train signalling.
More than 500,000 new concrete sleepers have been laid on rail line between Melbourne and Sydney and 200 kilometres of track standardised between Seymour and Albury-Wodonga.
The Wodonga Rail Bypass is taking shape with more than 250 beams now in place on the seven bridges and works have started on the new station building.
The project is due for completion in the second half of 2010.
Project description
In May, 2008, it was announced that the Federal and State governments would give $501.3 million to revitalise Victoria's north-east rail corridor in a historic agreement that will create an interstate rail freight super-highway and deliver major passenger rail service improvements in Victoria.
The North East Rail Revitalisation project will construct a rail bypass of Wodonga and upgrade the track between Melbourne and Albury-Wodonga.
The project involves:
- constructing the 5km dual track Wodonga Rail Bypass, enabling the removal the rail line and 11 level crossings from the city centre
- constructing a new train station in West Wodonga
- building new platforms between Broadmeadows and Albury-Wodonga
- converting 200km of track from broad gauge to standard gauge and replacing timber sleepers with concrete sleepers
- constructing four new passing loops and upgrading the standard gauge line between Seymour and Melbourne
- refurbishing three V/Line passenger trains and 15 carriages (including conversion to standard gauge)
- building a new stabling and maintenance facility for the converted trains.
Project benefits
- The North East Rail Revitalisation Project will create an interstate rail freight super-highway and deliver major improvements to passenger services.
- The Wodonga Rail Bypass will remove 11 level crossings from Wodonga, improving safety for rail passengers and road users.
- People in Seymour, Wangaratta, Benalla and Albury will have access to both V/Line and interstate CountryLink services once the new standard gauge track is constructed - that's five return services each day along the north-east rail corridor that will be more comfortable and reliable.
- Removing the rail line from the centre of Wodonga will open it up to major commercial opportunities, rejuvenate the city centre and assist Wodonga's development as a thriving regional hub.
The project is on track to be completed in 2010.
